Why upcycling?

Why Upcycling?

A look at upcycling from different perspectives and the differences between people around the world.

In this article:

  • Thoughts and informations about the question “Why upcycling” and why upcyclers have so much fun with it.

Why upcycle old stuff? What's so great about it?

This question has already been put to me by a gentleman at customs. I had bought 4000 soda can opener pulltabs in the USA, probably from a person who does not sleep very much at festivals and who is dogged, the tabs away from the cans in the four-digit range. The tabs also looked like this, hair, dirt, buttons and even a quarter of a dollar in cash was among the many gifts. Since several can tabs were glued to the quarter dollar, the seller had probably overlooked the “Krugerrant” of this collection.

I didn’t know that yet and customs couldn’t even make the slightest rhyme about what they saw during X-raying. Except the coin, they recognized it. Now if something illegal or forbidden or fake gets stuck at customs, you have to go here and open the package with the officials. Very rarely, however, they don’t even know what they are seeing and then exactly the same thing happens.

An upcycling fairy tale about the hanger that was kissed and whether he became a prince.

Is Upcycling a crime?

You sit there with the tense officials and answer the questions honestly until you hear:

“Ok they ordered 4000 single flaps of Coke cans in America to make a living room lamp out of them? If they would be so good then please open the package here at the table”.

Already after the first cut with the Cutter knife came a violent festival smell aroma from the package, which led by the optics of my 4000 can flaps, then already to a rather disgusting overall picture. The condition of the can flaps was filthy and shabby, seems to have been a wild festival.

“But they wash it before they make their lamp, or do they make their own fragrance lamp?”

Door opens colleague comes in

“And what was it now?”
“Garbage, he had can flaps collected from the floor coming from America, we already aired”.

“So now back to them, they have verifiably committed no crime and the case would be settled from our side, a tax offence could not be established and with the quarter dollar coin stuck somewhere in their tabs is the amount you may introduce unannounced not exceeded. Everything’s fine they can start with the lamp construction, nice day!”

The gentlemen from the German customs were probably not the only ones who have never heard the term “upcycling” and also not the only ones who have seen garbage as a lamp in the value of the home before their inner eye, thinking of making furniture out of waste and then calling it design.

Here you can see what has become of the beverage can opener flaps and what kind of upcycling lamps were made of them.

What is upcycling anyway?

Upcycling is old things that are no longer needed to give a new benefit. Things that have served their purpose of giving a new, better purpose to create beautiful things and create a sustainable consciousness. Conserving raw materials and criticism of the throwaway society are, along with creativity, the basis for upgrading and recycling things. More than recycling that is upcycling.

Is upcycling good for the environment?

Since upcycling is a special type of recycling, it is also good for the environment. Things and materials are used that would otherwise have been thrown away or come out of the garbage, at least they are materials that no one needs anymore and that already exist. So no new raw materials are needed and there is less rubbish. That protects the environment, but does not save it.

To describe upcycling as environmental protection is excessive in my opinion, it is only a small contribution to the ecological balance of garbage and it is certainly nothing that could catch the billions of tons of garbage in the world and it will never be a big part of climate protection. Much heavier is the motivation to upcyclen, the creativity and the need to create something and implement ideas.

Upcycling can improve the world but not save it!

What upcycling can do, however, is to create an awareness of how to conserve resources and think about today’s disposable society. When I see one of my lamps with 1000 can opener tabs, I also see the 1000 painted cans that were needed to build this one lamp. What an unbelievable pile of polluting garbage, what a pile of energy it takes to recycle the recyclables!

You can see from the example of the lamps that it is only a grain of sand as far as environmental protection is concerned, since the cans have landed in the garbage anyway. Should one now consider how many cans of beer one would have to drink per day to be able to build a lamp after a year recognizes that it will be hard and of course Cola cans to buy instead of bottles is the wrong approach. Of course you can also collect 15 cans of beer and 3985 tabs at a festival to sell them on Ebay, but this should also be difficult.

We Love Upcycling

I have discovered my passion for upcycling and I prefer to make lamps and can openers from flaps of conventional beverage cans. But this page should give you a view of the world of upcycling far beyond that!

Here I show you my projects and objects I have made and in a tutorial I explain how you can easily build cool design lamps from Coke cans tabs. Since the world of upcycling has much more to offer in terms of materials, ideas and objects, I have put together a gallery of the most beautiful and creative ideas that inspired me and above all inspired me.

Have fun discovering and you will be amazed what a creative world and what design jewels are hidden behind the things you wanted to throw away yesterday!
